Baião is a popular genre of music and dance that has its origins in the 19th century in the northeast region of the country. Its expression is validated by the use of the following musical instruments: viola caipira, triangle, fife, fiddle and accordion. In this musical genre, the Mixolydian mode is widely used and the theme is usually the daily life of the sertanejos (people from the interior of the northeast region) and the difficulties of their daily lives, as in the renowned song by Luiz Gonzaga, Asa Branca, which talks about the suffering due to drought in northeastern Brazil. It was in the second half of the 1940s that baião became popular, through the musicians Luiz Gonzaga (known as the king of baião) and Humberto Teixeira, who paved the way, through their migration to the rich southeastern region of Brazil, to other artists who would become very recognized, such as Dominguinhos, Sivuca and Carmélia Alves.
