In 1989, the British Council of Churches published a collection of essays with an arresting title: The Forgotten Trinity. The authors of these essays lament the neglect of the doctrine of the Trinity in the modern Church. To be sure, the Trinity is occasionally referred to in the Church such as the baptismal ritual or the benediction. But beyond these specific rituals, very little attention is given to the doctrine itself. Indeed, the Trinity has become a little more than a theological appendage in many evangelical churches today. But the doctrine of the Trinity can never be seen as an optional extra. Its neglect or forgetting has serious consequences  for the life of the Church.

On 25 September 2021, the Ethos Institute for Public Christianity, in collaboration with eight seminaries, organised a conference on ‘The Triune God’ to examine the significance of the doctrine of the Trinity. The papers that were presented at the conference are published in this volume under the Ethos Engagement Series.
