A barber does not sell haircuts, a barber sells chair-hours, and the arithmetic of a chair-hour is unforgiving. A $32 cut taking thirty minutes plus five of turnaround is 1.71 cuts an hour, so a chair at 50% booked yields $27.43 an hour and the same chair at 95% yields $52.11. Nothing about the haircut changed. The whole difference is whether somebody was sitting there.

Your floor rate, derived

A price copied from what others charge says nothing about your own costs. This starts from what your year actually needs: $44,000 of take-home income, $19,220 of overhead across the items listed, tax on profit, and the share of your hours that are genuinely billable (70% here, and the kit explains why not more).

That gives a floor of $51.61 an hour across 1,509 billable hours. Every step is printed so you can substitute your own numbers — there is a blank worksheet for exactly that.

The same chair earns $27.43 an hour or $52.11

A barber does not sell haircuts, a barber sells chair-hours. A $32 cut taking thirty minutes plus five of turnaround is 1.71 cuts an hour — so a chair at half booked yields $27.43 an hour and the same chair at 95% yields $52.11. Nothing about the haircut changed. The whole difference is whether somebody was sitting there.

Which is why a deposit on first-time bookings and a sensible no-show rule are worth more to a shop than a price rise. They move occupancy, and occupancy is the number with the leverage.

Then the finding that gives you an actual choice: because yield is price times cuts per hour, a 20-minute cut at $22.86 and a 45-minute cut at $45.71 are worth exactly the same per chair-hour. So volume-at-lower-price and time-at-higher-price can both work. What does not work is charging the volume price while taking the unhurried time.

Also inside: the five-minute turnaround that is easy to leave out, which adds 17% to a thirty-minute cut (14% of the chair's time) and does not shrink when you hurry; what an empty chair costs against its rent; and why a discount in a dead morning is pure gain while the same discount at a busy hour just moves people around and costs you money.

Includes a live Excel workbook and eight scripts — the deposit for first-timers, the regular who is always late, raising prices in a shop where everyone knows everyone, and asking a chair renter for a realistic split.

8 client scripts

Each one carries a line explaining why it is worded that way, because a script you do not understand is one you will not send. Placeholders are in [BRACKETS] so nothing goes out in someone else's words.

  • Introducing a deposit for first-time bookings
  • A regular who always arrives fifteen minutes late
  • Raising prices in a shop where everyone knows everyone
  • Declining to squeeze someone in at closing
  • Setting a no-show policy that works for walk-in trade
  • Charging properly for a long or complex cut
  • Asking a chair renter for a realistic split
  • Filling a quiet morning without discounting the busy ones

What this is not

These numbers are not a market price. They are arithmetic about you — what your income target requires. They do not tell you what your market will pay. If the number is far above what your market bears, that is real information: something has to move, and quietly working below the floor is the one option that cannot last.

These are scripts, not contracts, and nothing here is legal or tax advice. No script threatens statutory interest, collections or legal action — whether any of those is available to you depends on your contract and jurisdiction. The 25% tax figure is a placeholder; ask your accountant for yours.
