The story follows the relationship between a young boy and a tree, and how the tree continually gives to the boy throughout his life. The Giving Tree Activity & Comprehension Toolkit is a teaching resource that includes various activities, discussion questions, and comprehension strategies to aid in the understanding and analysis of the book. The toolkit can be used in an interdisciplinary study, incorporating various subjects such as language arts, social studies, and environmental science. It encourages critical thinking, empathy, and exploration of themes such as selflessness, friendship, and the consequences of taking without giving back.


The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein can be used to teach about friendship, caring, as well as used for studies in science (plants/apples) and social studies (communities/wants and needs).
