Program note:

The title of this work is a nod to John Adams’ orchestral work Short Ride in a Fast Machine, though the similarities essentially end there. The piece is built around several ostinato figures—a main one in the piano, which overlaps and interacts with several others in the saxophone, and a joint “glitching” rhythmic ostinato of sorts. Dissonant intervals—particularly seconds, sevenths, and ninths—permeate the texture, as do quarter tones, multiphonics, and percussive slap tongue in the saxophone part. The ride is short and sure to be quirky!
