This Is the Place Where the Trees Sing, Op. 74
Clarinet quintet
Duration: 5’
Level: Advanced
Year: 2023
Program Note: Materially, the trees “sing” through these instruments because they are made of wood—once part of a tree, now giving voice. Romantically, the first association I had with the singing of trees was the wind—sometimes gentle, sometimes harsher—passing through their leaves. The high harmonic partials in this piece evoke leaves stirred by a breeze. At times, the music suspends, like a leaf or a future fruit hanging still.
