Iron Age West Anatolians - Carians and Phrygians - 23andme format
During the Iron Age, western Anatolia was a mosaic of culturally related but politically distinct peoples.
Such groups as the Phrygians and Carians emerged from incoming Indo-European tribes in Western Anatolia. Both the Phyrigians and Carians descend from the earlier Luwians, a Bronze Age Indo-European people of western anatolia. Carians were known in antiquity as skilled mercenaries, sailors, and craftsmen. Occupying central-western Anatolia, with their capital at Gordion, the Phrygians built a prosperous state after the Bronze Age collapse. They were known for their distinctive tumulus burials, fine woodworking, metalwork, and the legendary “Phrygian cap.” The Phrygians were eventually toppled by the Cimmerians.
For this video, I gathered the raw genomes of 18 Iron Age Phrygians and Carians.
