Crown Tab Hat

DIGITAL KNITTING PATTERN available in English and German

A square beginning to a top-down hat.

The Crown Tab Hat is knit top-down in Stockinette stitch. It starts with a square, the crown tab, from which stitches are worked out in the round, with the crown shaping at the square’s corners. 

The pattern offers instructions for different gauges and can be knit, swatchless, with a range of yarn weights.

The Crown Tab Hat comes in two versions: the single-layer version has a folded-up brim (with the Reverse Stockinette stitch side showing) that is grafted to the body. 

The double-layer version is the length of two hats (the first knitted top-down, the second bottom-up). It is then folded into itself (with the crowns lining up) and the brim folded up. It can be knit with different colors for each half, creating two hats in one. The double-layer hat ends with a reverse crown tab.

Head Circumference (body measurement):

40 (45, 50, 55, 60, 65) cm 

15 ¾ (17 ¾, 19 ¾, 21 ¾, 23 ½, 25 ½) inch

Choose a size based on your head measurement. 

The finished hat will be about 12-15% smaller than the head circumference (negative ease). The finished measurements differ slightly depending on which gauge you’re knitting at.

GAUGE

The pattern can be knit with any gauge/yarn weight from Light Fingering to Aran. 

It includes instructions for a Stockinette stitch gauge between 19-36 sts = 10 cm / 4 inch (unblocked), in single stitch increments.

YARN & COLORS

Use a yarn weight of your choice (Heavy Lace weight to Aran weight) and a matching needle size.

For the single-layer hat, I’d recommend a denser fabric (than for the double-layer version) using a smaller needle size. 

Use one color throughout or get creative with colors: Knit with different colors for the body of the hat and brim, a contrasting crown tab, different colors for each half of the double-layer version, or work stripes and a contrasting brim.

NEEDLES

I recommend using DPNs, but circular needles (or your preferred needle style for small diameters) can be used as well. 

Required: Circular needles or a stitch holder for the provisional cast-on.

Eine von oben nach unten gestrickte Mütze, mit einem quadratischen Beginn.

Die Crown Tab Mütze wird von oben nach unten in Glatt-Rechts gestrickt. Sie beginnt mit einem Quadrat, aus dem Maschen in alle Richtungen gestrickt werden, wobei die Mützenspitze an den Ecken des Quadrats geformt wird. 

Die Mütze kann in verschiedenen Maschenproben und mit einer Reihe von Garnstärken gestrickt werden.

Es gibt zwei Versionen: Die einfache Version hat eine angenähte, umgeschlagene Krempe in Glatt-Links. 

Die doppellagige Version hat die Länge von zwei Mützen (die erste wird von oben nach unten gestrickt, die zweite von unten nach oben). Sie wird dann in sich selbst gefaltet (sodass die Mützenspitzen aufeinander liegen) und die Krempe umgeschlagen. Diese doppelte Version kann in unterschiedlichen Farben für jede Hälfte gestrickt werden, sodass zwei Mützen in einer entstehen.

Kopfumfang (Körpermaß):

Wähle eine Größe entsprechend dem Kopfumfang (Körpermaß). Die fertige Mütze wird etwa 12–15 % kleiner als der Kopfumfang sein. Die fertigen Maße unterscheiden sich geringfügig je nachdem, mit welcher Maschenprobe gestrickt wird.

GARN & FARBEN

Verwende ein Garn deiner Wahl und eine passende Nadelstärke. 

Für die einfache Mütze empfehle ich eine engere Maschenprobe (als für die doppelte Version) und eine kleinere Nadelstärke.

Verwende nur eine Farbe oder werde kreativ mit der Farbgestaltung: Stricke den Hauptteil der Mütze und die Krempe in verschiedenen Farben, oder das Quadrat der Mützenspitze in einer Kontrastfarbe, die beiden Hälften der doppellagigen Version in verschiedenen Farben oder arbeite mit Streifen oder einer kontrastierenden Krempe.
