This Keith Haring Art and Write lesson combines an artist study, a bold Keith Haring inspired artwork and writing about art. Students learn about Keith Haring, explore his bold lines, playful figures and energetic style, create their own artwork, and then continue with writing, artist statements, reflection pages and an exit ticket.

It is made for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers, and fits upper elementary art, middle school art, pop art lessons, cross-curricular art and sub plans. A PowerPoint step-by-step tutorial is included, so you can project the steps or leave the lesson with a sub.

WHAT STUDENTS DO

Students start with a Warm-Up Art Challenge, a lively picture of bold, colorful lines and simple dancing figures in Haring's style. The reading page covers who he was, where he worked, what made his style recognizable, and how his art carried messages about love, peace and social justice. Students then follow the tutorial to create their artwork, using the Quick-Pick Reference Images to choose dancing figures, barking dogs, aliens, radiant babies, music notes, hearts and arrows, so each piece turns out different.

The finished artwork has simple figures, strong outlines, energetic symbols and a patterned background. The example uses oil pastel, but you can use the materials that suit your classroom. Students practice line, shape, pattern, composition, personal expression and craftsmanship, then write about their work through non-fiction, fiction and opinion writing, reflections and artist statements.
