THE TEXTURE LAB™ 004 — THE OLD TREE | Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo
THE TEXTURE LAB™ 004 — THE OLD TREE
Creative Art Texture Activity + Teacher Memo | Grades 7–8
🌳 ONE OLD TREE. A HUNDRED TEXTURES. ENDLESS CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES!
Can your learners bring an ancient tree to life using nothing but pencil strokes?
Welcome to The Texture Lab™, where ordinary outlines become extraordinary works of art!
In File 004 — The Old Tree, learners explore the fascinating world of natural textures as they transform a simple tree illustration into a detailed piece of artwork.
From rough, weathered bark and delicate leaves to soft moss and uneven ground, every surface offers a new opportunity to experiment with mark-making techniques.
THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE
Learners investigate how different pencil marks can represent:
- Tree Bark: Rough, cracked surfaces using hatching, cross-hatching and irregular lines.
- Leaves: Delicate shapes, repeated patterns and fine details.
- Moss: Soft, uneven textures created through stippling and short strokes.
- Ground: A combination of dots, lines and shading to suggest soil, stones and natural surfaces.
Learners are encouraged to experiment with six mark-making techniques:
Hatching • Cross-hatching • Stippling • Scribbling • Contour Lines • Repeated Patterns
