A river elegy and a warning etched in steam and iron — Shadows on the Mississippi traces the 1865 steamboat Sultana tragedy on the Mississippi river through the eyes of Union POW soldiers being taken home after the Civil War, lantern-lit hope, and a night that split in fire.
