About the Composer

John Francis Barnett was an English Romantic composer, pianist, and educator, active during the Victorian era. A member of a distinguished musical family, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatoire under prominent figures like Moritz Hauptmann and Ignaz Moscheles, absorbing the German Romantic style. His works include orchestral, choral, and chamber music, with notable compositions such as the cantata The Ancient Mariner (1867). As a professor at the Royal College of Music, Barnett also contributed to music pedagogy through treatises on singing and composition.
