Bolshoi Oleni Ostrov means “large reindeer Island” in Russian. It is an ancient burial site on the Kola peninsula in arctic russia. Some of the earliest Uralic settlers in Fennoscandia had come into Fennoscandia through Bolshoi Oleni Ostrov. In this video, we will explore the genetics of 6 bronze age inhabitants of Bolshoi Oleni Ostrov. These early Uralians practiced reindeer herding, a tradition they have passed down to their Saami descendants. With PCA based ethnicity calculators, they resemble west siberians, namely the Khants and the Mansi, who are also Uralic speakers.

I ran the 6 genomes through my trait predictor tool for DNA analysis, the purchase link for which will be in the description of the video. 2 of the 6 samples were male, and they both carried Y lineage N1a1, which is commonly associated with Uralic speakers.
