The First 10 Days of Deeper Thinking | Educator Guide + Ready-to-Present Slides
The first days of school teach students more than names, procedures, and schedules.
They also communicate:
Will my questions be welcomed here?
Can I think differently?
Is it safe to struggle?
Can I change my mind?
Will unusual ideas be met with curiosity?
The First 10 Days of Deeper Thinking was created to help educators intentionally build a classroom culture where curiosity, complexity, reflection, and different ways of thinking are valued from the very beginning. Across ten purposeful experiences, students will move beyond surface-level introductions and practice meaningful habits of thought.
They will:
- Ask questions beneath the obvious
- Examine ideas from multiple perspectives
- Weigh difficult decisions
- Identify hidden assumptions
- Make unexpected connections
- Analyze rules, fairness, and systems
- Create within meaningful constraints
- Recognize missing information
- Develop stronger questions
- Reflect on the thinkers they are becoming
Each experience is designed to require little preparation while creating opportunities for rich discussion, student reflection, and deeper connection.

Classroom transitions
Most experiences can be completed in approximately 10–20 minutes and are especially suited for upper elementary and middle school learners, with opportunities to simplify prompts for younger students or extend discussion for older learners. Use all ten experiences as a purposeful sequence, choose the experiences that best meet your learners’ needs, or revisit them throughout the year whenever curiosity, connection, or deeper thinking needs a spark.
Belonging is not only knowing there is a place for you in the classroom. It is knowing there is a place for your questions, your ideas, and the way you think.
Begin the year with more than icebreakers.
Begin with deeper thinking.
