"A Musical Journey" (Advance Creative Writing)
This advanced creative nonfiction unit transforms your classroom into a professional publishing house where students collaboratively create a unified book that blends speculative fiction with personal memoir. The project has two interlocking components: a shared fictional world featuring a central character who can trigger memories through music, and individual creative nonfiction chapters in which students write their own memory-song narratives (memoir or reflection essay) that are woven into the fictional framework. This hybrid structure allows students to explore the power of music to unlock memory—both in fiction and in their own lives. The unit emphasizes professional collaboration, creative nonfiction craft, speculative world-building, editorial rigor, and the intersection of truth and imagination.
