Environmental Determinism: Defining Characters and Events in the Arctic*

Take a look behind the scenes of Arctic Noir.

Setting is key in genre fiction, and even more so when the story is set in the remote and often inhospitable Arctic.

This contextual essay accompanies Christoffer Petersen's The Ice Star, and explores the historical nature of environmental determinism in classic works such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Jack London's stories, and how it can still be seen in modern fiction.

This essay is perfect for students of Arctic Noir fiction.

My Review

Full disclosure: I wrote this. Yes, I am reviewing my own work. But hear me out... This essay represents one of those pivotal moments for me as a writer. I was just finishing my Master of Arts in Professional Writing, and this essay was part of the final thesis to be submitted. In many ways, writing it helped me identify what it was about stories about the environment, and the Arctic in particular, that I found so appealing. Applying the theory of environmental determinism to works such as Frankenstein, and, in turn, my own novels, helped me develop the environment as a character, and in doing so, my human characters became more - well - human. That's why I have no problem rating my own work, and even less problem giving it five stars. ;-)
