Glossolalia: The Biblical Gift of Tongues

Growing up in evangelical churches, one of the more colorful theological controversies I encountered was what Scripture called in ancient times, the “gift of speaking in tongues.” What’s known today as the rather peculiar phenomena of glossolalia. Truth is, most Christians believe whatever their respective churches teach on the subject and my purpose is not to supplant their theological assumptions. However, for personal as well as biblical reference, I’ve gathered what I consider the most accurate biblical (and peripherally biblical) information regarding the practice that was such a curiosity for me in my younger years. What’s more, despite my personal antipathy towards the modern practice, the fact is, it’s found in Scripture, so denying its manifestation in order to avoid conflict or misunderstanding would be remiss on the part of anyone.
