This Winter Snowman Craft and Write is an art, craft and literacy lesson for grades 1 to 5. Students follow a tutorial to make a winter snowman craft, then add their own artistic flavor by choosing from a variety of cut-and-glue elements, so every snowman turns out different.

After the craft, students complete fiction or non-fiction writing inspired by what they made, using planning pages, prompt pages or blank writing pages. The lesson wraps up with coloring, reflection and a 3 Stars and a Wish self-assessment. The adaptable templates make it work across different skill levels and ages.

HOW TO USE IT

Photocopy the craft elements and put a few out at each table so students can pick the ones they want. Save the unused pieces with your lesson plan for next year, which means less prep and less waste. The step-by-step PowerPoint makes it easy to teach yourself or leave for a substitute.

Once the snowmen are finished, guide students into writing about their craft. Choose the primary or intermediate writing pages to match your learners, and finish with the reflection and peer feedback pages.
