Witches blurring the lines of good & evil, soul-crushing betrayal, all roads point to murder!

Losing her mother at a young age, sixteen-year-old Claudette is burdened with depression, haunted by the memories of her mother's untimely death.

Unknowing of her fate, secrets come to light when her seventeenth birthday approaches, nothing is as it seems.

With her father marrying an evil woman and gifting her two equally vile step-sisters, Claudette's world is upended when he accepts a job in a new town steeped in mystery, magic, and darkness.

Mashalville is anything but normal.

Settling into her new surroundings, it’s not long before she realizes the real significance of turning seventeen.

Forced into making a decision that will change her life forever, there’s only one question she has to answer.

Will she keep her newfound magic or hold on to the normalcy of her past?

magic is so real and it'll keep you reading!

this book was a quick read that I literally could not put down. I just kept reading, even though it was a work night haha, because I had to finish this story! the magic of Kia's writing pulled me in and I literally could not stop. Claudette is a strong character, and she definitely shows her age at times. she could be annoying but it truly showed her character and made her relatable to myself as an annoying teenager (lol)! she meets two boys at her new school, Kevin Evans and Eli Powers. they're dreamy. Kevin seems shady to me.. I think I may be team Eli.

definitely check the trigger warnings. I've always struggled with anxiety and depression, so reading about these topics was huge. Kia made the conversations completely necessary throughout the story. they're super important conversations to have, if needed, so i appreciated the realness.

everything seemed so purposeful while written and it's amazing. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series. this book literally left me wanting so much more of the story! everyone needs to read this story.

Magical Read

KC has created such an awesome and magical world. Claudette's character deals with so much, such as depression, bullying, loss, and love. There was also a mystery in the story. I definitely enjoyed reading this and I'm looking forward to reading book two.

Absolutely loved this book!

It definitely kept me on my toes and much like the main character Claudette I had so many questions. As Claudette moves to a new town and goes to a new high school, there is a sense of mystery and whispers that all will be revealed on her 17th birthday. We are taken into the world of witches, murder and betrayal. Who is good? Who is evil? Who can she trust?

The ending is a cliffhanger and worked well as an elusive text message between Claudette’s boyfriend and her friends.

I love the two main love interests, Kevin and Eli. At first I liked Kevin and thought he was sweet but Eli and Claudette have an undeniable connection.

Kia also touched on sensitive and relevant topics like bullying, suicide and colourism. Representation and diversity is important so if you’re looking to read more books by Black authors with Black characters then I highly recommend this one if you love fantasy books with a bit of romance

Must read !!

Claudette Richardson’s life is intense. On top of the usual stresses of being a teenager, she’s a witch! Seventeen: Magic Is Real Part 1 is an enchanting, breathtaking and exquisitely written novella. The exceptional storyline features magic, revenge, the trauma from grief, and a self discovery journey. It had me engrossed from the first page until the very last which was left with a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.
