Sustaining Imagination: The PLAYWOOD Concept

Growing up along the rugged Norwegian coastline, young Morten and his peers found joy and purpose in the most unexpected places. Rather than seeking entertainment in the bright lights of Hollywood, they turned their attention to the driftwood that washed ashore, crafting their own sustainable playhouses and immersing themselves in the simple pleasures of childhood.

These industrious youth would venture out in boats, scouring the coast and collecting the large, floating pallets and driftwood that threatened to damage their elders' vessels. While engaging in this civic-minded task, the children also fulfilled their innate need for play and exploration. They discovered that the varied textures and imperfect shapes of the reclaimed wood provided the perfect canvas for their imaginative endeavors, transforming the coastal debris into vibrant, one-of-a-kind "playwood" structures.

In an era dominated by digital distractions, this artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the value in reconnecting with the natural world and harnessing the power of collective, community-driven efforts. The PLAYWOOD concept celebrates the ingenuity and resourcefulness of these young coastal dwellers, who found joy and purpose in tasks that benefited both themselves and their elders.

By sharing this narrative, artist Morten Klementsen invites viewers to reconsider the notion of play, sustainability, and the importance of nurturing the imagination of the next generation. In a world increasingly consumed by screens and virtual experiences, the PLAYWOOD artwork stands as a testament to the enduring allure of hands-on exploration and the transformative potential of repurposed materials.
