This is an account of years long ago ( 1950's) roaming the world at sea on ships of the Bankline, one of the many shipping companies then under the British flag.    The voyages were long, up to 2 years and each one was an adventure particularly because the destination ports were not always known in advance, unlike liner trades.   The world was circumnavigated, often twice or more in one voyage and rarely without incident.  It was the years before satellite navigation, smart phones, internet, radar even, in the early days, and communication was by morse lamp on the bridge, and laboriously by morse key to Head Office via Portis Head meaning that the Master had many decisions to make on the spot, unlike today with instant communication to Head Office.

The growth and decline of the company which lasted more than 100 years in the face of containerisation is touched upon. Also,  heady days of having 50 ships roaming all corners of the world .
