SEL Language Cards — Real Phrases for Co-Regulating Children in Early Childhood Settings
Do you ever find yourself in a moment with a child who is really struggling — and the right words just don't come?
These cards give them to you.
The SEL Language Cards are 26 printable flashcards designed for Australian early childhood educators. Each card gives you the exact phrase to use with young children in real moments — the kind you actually face in the room every day. Co-regulation, big feelings, behaviour support, child-safe language, conflict resolution. Words that actually work, written down so you don't have to think of them on the spot.
Print them. Laminate them. Keep a set in your pocket.
What is inside
26 flashcards across the CASEL 5 framework:
🟣 Self-Awareness — helping children notice and name what they feel 🔵 Self-Management — breathing, grounding, and calming together 🟡 Social Awareness — empathy, perspective-taking, and belonging 🟢 Relationship Skills — self-advocacy, repair language, and conflict resolution 🔴 Responsible Decision-Making — thinking through choices and consequences
Plus a Wheel of Emotions reference page, a Five Approaches to Positive Language guide, Key Definitions (Challenging Behaviour, Child Safe Standards, Behaviour Support Plans), and an Educator Guide with EYLF 2.0 documentation examples.
Every card has two sides
The front gives you the phrase. Clear, large, easy to read at a glance.
The back tells you when and why it works — with the theory explained in plain language (Daniel Siegel, Stuart Shanker, Louise Porter, Ross Greene). There is also a translation box so educators who speak languages other than English can write the phrase in their home language. Especially useful for multilingual teams and EAL families.
