The Great Big Thank You (AUDIO)

Reading, or in this case listening to, one of Gill Oliver’s stories is always a joy. I know I will be smiling at her turns of phrase and in this fable, there is something very real and grounded about the characters. The story builds from the premise that the inconspicuous people at the cracks of any main story or parable also have life and influence. The umbrella of ‘The Good Samaritan’ pushes the boat out onto the waves and the tale builds in complexity and tension as the conflict develops. But there is always humour too in the delicious turns of phrase and the opinions given to the characters. Each has his or her own valid reasons for behaving as they do, and it is the outworking of their actions that drives the story to its point of no return.
On the way, I learned about some interesting spider habits and diabetes management, but these were incidental to the well-paced and constructed story with its satisfying ending.
Gill Oliver reads at a gentle pace with clarity that allows the words to speak for themselves.
