Cassandra Cowl | Tunisian Crochet Cowl Pattern

Expand your Tunisian crochet skills while making a cozy, textured cowl.

The Cassandra Cowl is a textured Tunisian crochet cowl pattern designed to help you move beyond the basic stitches and explore three beautiful techniques: Tunisian Post Stitch, Arrowhead Stitch, and Smock Stitch.

Originally created for my Advanced Stitches class at Tunisian Crochet Weekend at Warm and Wooly in Minnesota, Cassandra was designed as a skill-building project that turns new Tunisian crochet techniques into a finished accessory you’ll actually want to wear.

Instead of practicing each technique on a separate swatch, you’ll combine multiple Tunisian crochet stitches to create contrasting sections of texture throughout the cowl.

The Tunisian Post Stitches create dimensional ribbed texture, the Arrowhead Stitch creates a more open, lace-like fabric, and the Smock Stitch adds beautiful raised texture.

Cassandra is worked flat from the top down. After the main body is complete, textured borders are added along the sides and the cowl is seamed only halfway down, creating a cozy neck while allowing the lower portion to open comfortably over the shoulders.

Because the different stitch patterns naturally create different row heights, the pattern also uses short rows to help balance the sections and create a more even finished fabric.

Pattern Details

Yarn: DK weight yarn, approximately 315 yards

Hook: 7 mm Tunisian crochet hook with a 16-inch cable, or size needed to meet gauge

Gauge: 14.5 sts x 15.5 rows = 4" x 4"

Construction: Worked flat from the top down, borders added after the main body, then partially seamed

Skill level: Best suited for crocheters who are already comfortable with the fundamentals of Tunisian crochet and are ready to explore more advanced stitches

The sample shown was made using Sunshine Queen Fiber Arts Cruella DK in the colorway Blue Hydrangea, a 60% Fine Non-Superwash Merino and 40% Silk blend.
