Ustaadha Latifa

Ustaadha Latifa is a Black female reciter who holds an ijaaza in Recitation Hafs 'an Aasim by the way of Shaatibiyyah from Damascus, Syria. She supports women to deepen their connection to Allah through the study of Qur’aanic reflection and vocabulary.

She lived and studied in the Middle East for ten years then taught Arabic and Islamic Studies, Women's Fiqh, Tafseer, and Tajweed to Arabic speaking students in Yemen and then here in the United States. If you want to learn how to recite confidently AND know the meaning of what you recite, if you want to feel yourself progress as a Muslimah, and if you want to nourish your spiritual connection to Allah, then register with Ustaadha Latifa for the next session of Walk the Qu'raan.

Allah honors His Beloved Prophet  (ﷺ) , by saying, "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often" (Al Ahzaab 33:21). And in a longer Hadith when Aisha was asked "O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah." She said: "Don't you read the Qur'an?" I (Sa'd bin Hisham), said: "Yes." She said "The character of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the Qur'an."

This verse and hadith serve as the cornerstone of our approach to Qur'aanic study at Walk the Qur'aan. We aim not only to help our students recite and memorize the Qur'aan but also to deeply reflect upon and apply its teachings in our daily lives. Our goal is to cultivate a 'Qur'aan lifestyle' where every action, thought, and intention aligns with the divine guidance sent by Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of this when he said, "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it" (Sahih Bukhari). At Walk the Qur'aan, we take this Hadith to heart, offering a comprehensive program that goes beyond surface-level understanding. Through our morning sessions, 'Verses and Vitality,' Zoom classes, WhatsApp community, weekly assignments, daily reflections and in-depth PDF guides, we provide the tools necessary for our students to truly walk the Qur'aan, internalizing its principles and making them the foundation of their lives.

We teach from 14 Qur'aan Skill Sets...

  • 1. Letters, Phonetics and Numbers:

Learn the Arabic phonetic system and perfect your articulation of Arabic letters and sounds, called Makhaarij, focusing on correct pronunciation. Also learn the numbers and how to count in Arabic to follow and recognize the numbered verses and pages in the Arabic Mushaf.

  • 2. Introduction to Tajweed:

Begin by understanding the significance of Tajweed and its role in preserving the integrity of the Qur'aan.

  • 3. Rules of Noon (Idgham, Iqlab, Idthhaar, and Ikhfaa):

    3. Rules of Noon (Idgham, Iqlab, Idthhaar, and Ikhfaa):

Study the rules governing the merging and nasalization of specific letters. Finally feel your tongue as it makes the proper sounds.

  • 4. Rules of Madd:

Master the elongation rules for vowels and their application in different parts of the Qur'aan.

  • 5. Reading Fluency:

Engage in regular recitation exercises to improve fluency and accuracy in Qur'anic recitation.

  • 6. Qur‘aanic Memorization:

Learn and memorize selected Qur'aanic verses, to expand your references of the Qur’aan; brush up on the Surahs you’ve already memorized or set new goals for new surahs.

  • 7. Tafseer:

Foster a deeper connection with the words of Allah by delving into the explanation and commentary of the Qur’aan. Why did Allah send this verse down to us? Tafseer constitutes a collection of knowledge intended to describe what the Qur’aan mentions, and the background of its revelation.

  • 8. Prophets and People of the Qur‘aan:

Learn the stories of the 25 Prophets mentioned in the Qur’aan. Allah relates to us these stories to develop our character. Feel yourself grow in knowledge and action as you connect to each Prophet.

  • 9. Arabic Grammar:

Students will learn how words are formed and how they interact in sentences. By mastering Arabic grammar, students gain a solid foundation for reading, writing, and comprehending the language with accuracy and precision. This knowledge opens doors to understanding the Qur’aan.

  • 10. Adab (Islamic Etiquette and Manners):

Read and practice the principles of noble social conduct and learn how prophetic supplications shape our daily interactions, strengthen relationships, and refine character.

  • 11. Qur‘aanic Arabic Vocabulary:

Immerse yourself in the rich language of the Qur’aan, exploring the meanings and usage of key words and phrases by using the Hans Wehr dictionary. Gain a deeper understanding of the divine text and enhance your ability to engage with its profound teachings. Words hold the key to your spiritual awakening and the focus you’ve been wanting in your Salat.

  • 12. Voice, Rhythm, Tone:

Finally develop YOUR VOICE that is confident in reciting the Qur’aan. With courage, patience and perseverance you can do it!

  • 13. Comprehension and Reflection:

At the core of Walk the Qur’an is the art and act of Tadabbur—deep reflection upon the words of Allah. It’s not just something we teach. It’s the essence of everything we do. You’ll learn a clear Framework for Reflection that helps you slow down, internalize, and apply the verses of the Qur’an in your everyday life. This practice strengthens your heart, sharpens your awareness, and draws you closer to the One who revealed the Book.

Because transformation doesn’t come from information alone—it comes from reflection that leads to action.

  • 14. Commands and Prohibitions:

Be of those who have Taqwa who Allah has promised to provide for with resources they didn’t expect, to remove them out of every difficulty and ultimately enter them into Jannah. Study the verses that shape and dictate your Deen and learn how to obey Allah in the manner He has prescribed. Feel yourself growing, understanding and moving towards the actions that truly please Allah.

By the end of each four week session, you will have gained the expertise and confidence to Walk the Qur'aan, because you will have enhanced your comprehension of the sacred text. Whether you are a beginner or seeking to refine your recitation skills and Arabic language, this school offers a comprehensive journey towards connecting to Allah and living the Deen with confidence.

We invite you to join us on this journey to let the Qur'aan mold your character walking in the footsteps of our Beloved Prophet (ﷺ) and to make it the guiding force in your life. At Walk the Quran, we seek to embody Allah's command, "Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon their hearts?" (Quran, 47:24). Together, let us unlock our hearts and align our lives with the Qur'aan as well as authentic Hadith.
