When a mermaid dies, their mortal wound festers with a bloom of coral and seaweed, which within moments, absorbs the corpse, leaving nothing but a fresh patch of marine plant life in the sand.

Madgka, a skittish mandarin goby, is the only known merfolk whose Death Bloom did not succeed in consuming him.
