Griffin's Shape Hunt: 14 Printable Playdough Shape & Pattern Mats for Preschool (Ages 3–6)
Roll it, fill it, find the shape! 14 printable playdough mats with Griffin the toucan and friends from What's That, Remy?, for ages 3–6.
What's inside:
- 10 shape mats: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, star, heart, diamond, pentagon and hexagon. Each one has a big shape to roll a snake around, corners to count with dough balls, a picture to fill with flattened dough (a bus, a sailboat, a beehive, Griffin's birdhouses…), a shape hunt row, and the shape word to trace
- 4 pattern mats: AB, AAB, ABC, a growing tower, and a make-your-own pattern row
- A one-page guide for grown-ups: ways to play, tips and safety
- Colour AND ink-saver versions, in Letter and A4 sizes
Why it works: rolling, pinching and pressing dough is the "heavy work" occupational therapists use to build little hands' strength and control. The shape hunt shows shapes turned, stretched and in different sizes on purpose, because early-maths research shows children learn shapes best from many examples, not just the "typical" one. Pattern play is an early maths skill in its own right.
Print on card stock and laminate (or use sheet protectors) for wipe-clean, use-again play. Works with playdough, buttons, pom-poms or paper shapes, plus a dry-erase marker.
Great for preschool, pre-K, kindergarten, homeschool, OT sessions, morning bins and quiet time.
Adult supervision: playdough and small pieces are not for children who still put things in their mouths.
