This movie is truly remarkable. It defies categorization, as it delves into the depths of metaphysical psychological-imagining drama. While some may label it as a romance-fantasy, that description falls short.

I have never encountered a film quite like this before. It serves as a powerful portrayal of alienation, disaffectedness, loneliness, and the profound impact of parental loss.

Under the masterful direction of Andrew Haigh, the story follows Andrew Scott, a gay writer living in London, who forms a connection with his neighbor, played by Paul Mescal, who is also gay.

Scott's parents tragically passed away in a car accident when he was just twelve years old. The narrative takes us back in time, allowing Scott to visit his parents as they were thirty years ago. Through their conversations, unresolved issues are explored, including Scott's early realization of his sexual orientation.

This film is haunting, surreal, and intricately layered, demanding the viewer's complete attention and engagement. Unexpected twists and turns keep you captivated throughout.

It manages to evoke deep emotions without resorting to contrived sentimentality. The intensity of the viewing experience rivals that of "Brokeback Mountain," albeit in a different manner. The theme of loss permeates every scene, beautifully poignant and at times heart-wrenching. It is profoundly touching and often deeply moving.

On a personal level, I found myself relating to this film. My own father passed away in 1982, and I have often imagined conversations with him, discussing the paths life has taken and his acceptance of my sexual orientation. The moment when Scott's father expresses his love for him is incredibly powerful.

The entire cast delivers brilliant performances, with Mescal standing out as an exceptional actor.

However, it is Andrew Scott who truly shines, delivering a bravura and masterful performance without descending into exaggerated theatrics. His portrayal is quietly sincere, commanding, and yet restrained. Scott effortlessly taps into the complex internal emotions of the character, displaying an organic and instinctive understanding.

I am eager to revisit this cathartic and profoundly humane film. It is a rare and magnificent achievement by all involved.

What an exceptional contribution to the past year and beyond in cinema.
