The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a retired American single-seat, twin-engine stealth attack aircraft developed by Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the United States Air Force. The F-117 features a distinctive faceted design to minimize radar cross-section, utilizing flat surfaces and sharp edges for stealth. It was the first operational aircraft designed around stealth technology and employed fly-by-wire flight controls to manage its inherently unstable configuration. Although primarily used for precision strikes against high-value targets, it lacked air-to-air combat capabilities. A total of 64 F-117s were built, including five prototypes, with the aircraft officially retired in 2008—though some have continued to fly in limited capacities post-retirement.
