He was born in Pskov in 1902. In 1924 he studied at the Leningrad Academy of Arts under the guidance of professors Savinsky and Eberling.

The art historian Lukomsky called the artist a true adherent of classical art. Watercolor works by Chistovsky are amazing by their technical perfection. Among the main subjects of creativity are naked women, still lifes, flowers, as well as portraits of celebrities, landscapes, mythological scenes, flowers and icons.

In the south of France (in Cenevieres), the artist had a beautiful garden and a rich conservatory, where he grew and painted his favorite orchids.

Paintings of Leo Chistovsky enjoyed constant demand in the galleries of France, England and America. The artist was a member of the National Society of Arts (Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts). In 1930 he joined the Association of Independent Artists. As part of this society, Chistovsky participated in many exhibitions in the Grand Palais in Paris. The artist died in 1969 in Cenevieres.

The artist's talent was appreciated. Three of his paintings (including the watercolor "Sleeping Girl") are in the Russian Museum, "Bather" is stored in the Moscow Tretyakov Gallery and several paintings - in the museum Villefranche de Rouergue near Cenevieres (France).
