Metamorphosis is a tone poem that takes the listener and performer through a journey, depicting the organic life cycle of any and all things. The pedaled passages throughout the piece significanty enrich the harmonies whether tonal, dissonant, or atonal. There are two lighter sectoins throguhtout the piece that are similar in character, but with one slightly more playful than the other. They both begin with a whole tone motive that progressiveley resolves to a major or minor tonality (first passage minor, second passage major). The minor tonality gives the natural impression and instability that there is more to come following the lighter section, then echoing the A section after. The second mirroring lighter section resolves to a major tonality, giving the natural impression of stability, definity, and celebration. Both of these sections also build suspense with random accented bursts in the right and left hands that encourage the idea of growth and change. In the main melody, each time the A section returns, it builds continuously, with each pedaled sentence creating a pulsing effect, giving it a life of it’s own.
