This Autumn Leaves Art Project is a colorful mixed media fall lesson for grades 1 to 4 that teaches the element of art line. Students use paint, oil pastel, soft pastel and paper to create patterned autumn leaves and arrange them into a striking fall composition.

Students paint colorful leaf paper, draw leaf outlines and veins, fill each leaf with a different line pattern, cut them out and assemble them onto a soft, cool-colored background. The finished pieces show contrast, movement and variety, and look great on display.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students experiment with different kinds of lines and see how line can create mood, variety and interest. Instead of drawing one leaf, they create several, give each a different line pattern, and arrange them with thoughtful spacing and balance, exploring pattern, contrast, color, composition and collage-style assembly along the way.

Use it for autumn art lessons, fall bulletin boards, leaf art projects, line art lessons, homeschool art and sub plans. The step-by-step pages make it easy to guide students through the process.
