The Unstoppable Ruby LaRue
The Unstoppable Ruby LaRue is Episode 003 of The Rock and Roll Rewind Project
What happens when the spotlight becomes brighter than the life behind it?
The Unstoppable Ruby LaRue is the third episode of an original musical fiction series created by Gavin How.
Through seven original tracks, it journeys into the glamour, excitement and darker side of the 1920s — a decade of jazz, cabaret, changing social attitudes and rapidly evolving popular music.
At the centre of the story is Ruby LaRue, a young performer whose talent, confidence and stage presence propel her from childhood prodigy to nightclub sensation.
But behind the sequins, applause and carefully created public image lies another story — one of ambition, vulnerability, complicated relationships and the consequences of growing up beneath the spotlight.
From the confidence and swagger of The Unstoppable Ruby LaRue and I Don't Like Boys, to the sophisticated harmonies of The 300 Club, the darkness of Bang! and the exuberant finale of The Soirée Has Started, the seven tracks form one continuous musical journey through Ruby's world.
The episode concludes by travelling even further back in time with The 300 Club (78RPM Shellac Version) — a deliberately aged interpretation designed to evoke the sound and character of a record that might have been played during Ruby's own era.
Blending jazz, cabaret, period vocal harmony and late-1920s musical influences with contemporary production, The Unstoppable Ruby LaRue explores a world where entertainment, celebrity, desire and ambition collide.
