Who would have thought that strips of tape, two metres apart, snaking around the supermarket carparks and showing us where to wait to be allowed to enter and do our weekly shop, would become a thing? But it has and it’s a thing we are going to have to get used to for a while at least. Not one for wasting time, I like to keep my hands busy whilst queuing and socks are the perfect carry around project!
Stand in Line features a simple knit and purl stitch pattern, easy to memorise and perfect for short bursts of knitting to alleviate the boredom of waiting…
Knit from the cuff down with slip stitch heel flap and a functional square heel, I have continued the pattern right to the end of the toe shaping for extra textured interest. Using DK sock yarn makes for a comfy pair of house socks that work up really quickly too and the pattern is written for 7 sizes from child to large adult so there’s a pair for everyone!
Skill Level
Easy - DK socks grow much quicker than 4ply making them perfect for a first time sock knitter. An experienced sock knitter should be able to knock out a pair in no time at all!
Skills required
sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
Leg circumference: 11.5 (13.75, 16, 18.5, 20.5, 23, 25.5) cm
Leg length as per pattern: approx 8 (8, 10.5, 10.5, 12, 12.5, 12.5) cm to heel flap (can be adjusted with more or fewer pattern repeats). Foot length adjustable to fit.
A note on choosing the right size
Measure your foot around the widest part and choose a size that is approx 10% - 15% less than this for a good fit. So, although my foot is nearly 23cm around at it’s widest part, I knit size 5 with a finished circumference of 21.5cm for a comfy house sock but probably could have gone down another size for a closer fit. For the foot length, measure the length of your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of big toe and measure your sock from the end of the heel flap when working out where to begin toe shaping.
Yarn Requirements
DK sock yarn approx 80 (100, 150, 170, 250, 290, 320)m.
Sample uses The Knitting Goddess DK sock yarn (100% British Whitefaced Woodland, 300m/100g )
I would recommend 1 (1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2) skeins
It is notoriously hard to give exact yarn quantities for socks as every pair should be knitted to fit the length of your foot. If you were to use the suggested yarn I would be fairly confident that you could get a pair of socks out of one skein in all but the largest 2 sizes and even then only if you were knitting them for a UK 8/ US 8.5/Euro 42 or larger.

26sts x 38rows = 10cm pattern worked in the round on 3mm needles
