Self-Advocacy Sentence Starters
These Self-Advocacy Sentence Starters are designed to help upper-elementary students build confidence, independence, and clear communication skills. This one-page, student-friendly handout supports children in asking for help, clarifying directions, requesting processing time, and communicating emotional or sensory needs.
The sentence starters are organized into four clear categories:
- Understanding and clarifying
- Asking for help
- Requesting processing time
- Emotional regulation and breaks
This resource is especially supportive for neurodivergent learners, including students with ADHD, dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, anxiety, and other learning differences. It is also helpful for any child who benefits from explicit language and structure when learning how to ask for support.
Families can use this guide during everyday routines, homework time, or school conversations to help children practice self-advocacy in a way that feels respectful, appropriate, and authentic.
