Trans-Africa Guide: The West Route from Europe to Cape Town
We drove the west route through Africa ourselves, from Hamburg to Cape Town, in our own vehicle and with our dog. Out of that came a 173 page guide: compact, all in one place, everything we would have liked to know while preparing and instead learned on the road.
It covers how the borders actually run, what the visas cost and where you are best off applying for them, how much money to budget, which route is realistically drivable at the moment, and what daily life feels like between desert, rainforest and checkpoints.
What you get:
- 16 African countries from Morocco to South Africa, each with its own chapter: entry, SIM, fuel, safety, route and highlights
- A whole chapter on borders and paperwork, step by step
- Visa overview, packing list, budget, and travelling with a dog
- What we underestimated, what went well, and what we would do differently next time
We only got back in May 2026, so the information is as current as it gets. And because things on this route keep changing, you get every update free of charge.
Whether you want to drive it yourself or are simply curious how a trip like this works: this is our whole experience, written down.
(After buying you get the download link by email and on the confirmation page. The PDF works on a phone, a tablet and a laptop, and offline on the road.)
And if the guide does not help you: write to us within 30 days, tell us briefly what was missing, and you get your money back.
Thank you, and enjoy,
Marie & Johnny
