Sanding 101

Sanding is where most finishes are won or lost, long before any paint or stain goes on.

Sanding 101 is my complete sanding guide: which sander to reach for, how grits actually work, and exactly how I move through them so the finish comes out smooth.

Inside this guide:

• The tools I use and when: orbital sander, palm sander, Surfprep 3x4, multi-tool, and contour sanding blocks, each with pros, cons, and steps to use
• Grit progression explained, with a chart of what each grit is for
• How to move through grits without leaving scratches behind
• The 4 sanding mistakes I see most, and how to avoid them
• My sanding workflow: when to strip first, when to sand straight through, and my grit steps for paint, stain, between coats, and final finish
