πŸ—ΊοΈ Curriculum Breakdown

This collection focuses deeply on mastering Percentages, Profit and Simple Interest through a carefully curated system:

Two ways to compare, and they are not the same way (2 Sub-levels): The level opens on the distinction everything after it rests on. Two amounts can be compared by taking one from the other or by dividing one into the other, and the two questions have different answers - a price that went up by fifty dollars and a price that went up by fifty per cent are different sentences about different shops. Then two ratios are set against each other, which cannot be done by looking: 3 : 5 and 5 : 8 are compared by writing both as fractions over one denominator, and that is the method the per cent sign is about to make unnecessary for ever.

The per cent sign, and the three ways of writing one amount (7 Sub-levels): Per cent means out of a hundred, and that is the whole definition - so a percentage is a fraction whose denominator has been fixed, which is why two of them can be compared at a glance when two ordinary fractions cannot. Six rungs move an amount between the three ways of writing it: a fraction, a decimal and a percentage. The conversions are rows, because a fraction is drawn with a bar and not typed with a slash; the decimal pair is not, because neither end of it is a fraction and the move is the one M14 spent three rungs on - two places along, calculating nothing. Eighths and fortieths are in the pool on purpose, because 37.5% is the answer a child who has only ever seen round ones reads as a mistake of their own.

What it is a percentage OF (3 Sub-levels): Three rungs on the quantity that has stopped being written down. The reverse ask comes first - one amount written as a percentage of another, where the whole has to be found in the sentence rather than handed over - and then the fact that the parts of one whole add to a hundred per cent, which is not a rule to remember but the meaning of a hundred per cent. The strand ends at the pie chart, the only chart in the book with no scale on it: the circle is the whole, every sector is read against it, and a sector has no count of its own until somebody says how many there were altogether. Nothing is printed on a sector when the question is which sector it is.

An amount that goes up or comes down (2 Sub-levels): Two steps, and the second is the one that gets dropped: work out the change, then add it on or take it off. An answer that is the change on its own is a right answer to a question nobody asked. The decrease is drilled immediately after the increase it does not undo - ten per cent on and then ten per cent off does not come back to where it started, because the second ten per cent is ten per cent of something bigger, and a child who has met that here will not be surprised by it in a shop.

Buying and selling, where the whole is the cost price (5 Sub-levels): Five rungs, and the first has no percentages in it at all: a child who cannot say which of two prices is the cost price has nothing to take a percentage of. Then profit per cent and loss per cent, which are the same rung with one sign changed and are both reckoned on the cost price and never on the selling price - both numbers are printed in the question, so the wrong one is always within reach. Then the cost price worked backwards out of a percentage of itself, which is the hardest thing in the level. Then the discount, which is the exception: it comes off a third price, the one on the label, so it has to be read rather than remembered.

Interest, which is a percentage charged again every year (3 Sub-levels): One rule with four letters in it, so the only real question is which of them is missing - and the last rung is the same mistake as all the others wearing its final costume, because the rate is per YEAR and a time given in months has to become a fraction of a year before it multiplies anything. Months rather than days, deliberately: how many days a year is counted as differs from one country to the next, and these books are sold in all of them.

πŸ“– How To Use This Workbook

Print the workbook, read each rung's method page, and let your child work inside the printed frame. Then check the answers your way: in the printable answer-key PDF included in this download, or online, one page at a time, with the order ID on your Payhip receipt (valid for six months). Please keep the answer key for the adult marking the work and do not share it with your child: the workbook only works if they have worked each answer out for themselves.
