What began as an exploration of Windrush and Notting Hill Carnival developed into something much larger: an investigation into Caribbean Britain’s history, identity, institutions, lived experience and future.

This complete digital collection brings together all five books in Kelyon B. Ross’s Caribbean Britain journey — Volumes 1, 2, 3A, 3B and 4 — following the research from the generation that arrived, through what Caribbean people built in Britain, to the questions facing Caribbean Britain today.

The journey begins with Volume 1: Windrush, examining the people, their arrival, experiences, contribution and the foundations they helped establish in post-war Britain.

Volume 2: Notting Hill Carnival — 60 Years Strong turns to one of Caribbean Britain’s most recognisable cultural institutions. It explores Carnival not simply as an annual celebration, but through its history, meaning, development, contribution and continuing place within Britain.

The investigation then moves into Black Britain Today, where the research increasingly leaves the library and enters the community.

Volume 3A: Legacy in Motion — Before the Road records the questions, conversations and discoveries that emerged as the author prepared to investigate Caribbean Britain and Notting Hill Carnival more directly.

Volume 3B: Where We Stand — On the Road takes the reader into the journey itself. Interviews, community voices, public meetings, observations, encounters and the experience of Carnival begin to test what had previously been understood. The researcher is no longer simply examining the story from outside. He has entered it.

Finally, Volume 4: Caribbean Britain Today — Our Lived Experience: Beyond The Road asks what the journey has revealed about Caribbean Britain today — its lived experience, institutions, achievements, challenges and what we are building for the generations that follow.

After generations of presence in Britain, the question can no longer be limited to what Caribbean people contributed.

What did we build?

What survived? What disappeared? What became an institution? What knowledge was successfully transferred? Who inherited the organisations, businesses, cultural traditions and community infrastructure created by previous generations? And what are we preparing for those who come next?

Across the collection, history gradually becomes investigation.

What started with Windrush leads to Carnival. Carnival leads to questions about community, leadership, education, economics, culture, ownership, representation and institutional continuity. Those questions eventually develop into the wider Caribbean Britain Inquiry.

These books do not claim that everybody interviewed, encountered or observed agrees. Nor does the author pretend to have begun the journey knowing where the evidence would lead.

Instead, the collection documents the evolution of the investigation itself.

“At first, I was gathering information. Then I realised I was collecting evidence.”

THIS COLLECTION INCLUDES:

Volume 1 — Windrush

The people, the journey and the foundations of Caribbean Britain.

Volume 2 — Notting Hill Carnival: 60 Years Strong

The history, significance and continuing story of one of Caribbean Britain’s most visible institutions.

Volume 3A — Black Britain Today: Legacy in Motion — Before the Road

The questions and investigation before entering the road.

Volume 3B — Black Britain Today: Where We Stand — On the Road

The journey into the community, the evidence and the lived experience.

Volume 4 — Caribbean Britain Today: Our Lived Experience — Beyond The Road

What the journey revealed — its lived experience, institutions, achievements, challenges and what we are building for the generations that follow.

Together, the five books ask a question extending far beyond Carnival:

What enables a community to build, sustain, adapt and successfully transfer its institutions from one generation to the next?

This is the complete Caribbean Britain journey so far.

From Windrush to Carnival.

From history to lived experience.

From gathering information to collecting evidence.

From what we inherited to what we will leave behind.

Five books. Four volumes. One journey.
