Finding the Names — Installment 72 opens Roll 9 of the New Orleans inward slave manifests (National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 9, NAID 173909088), images 1–120: 258 more entries (257 named, 1 unnamed) on 50 documents, dated December 1841 to June 1842, transcribed name by name from the original records.Inside: the brig Creole sails twice more, five months after her famous rising — 17 people from Richmond, 15 shipped by Robert Lumpkin again, and two from Norfolk, Abraham King and Amy Morris. Sam of the schooner Barton, classed "Mulatto," was sent to the Custom House after an inspector wrote that he was "not a Mulattoe — but in my opinion — a White Man." Four men — Thompson, David, Henry and Charles — were put aboard the U.S. schooner Essex in a handwritten Cedar Keys letter, though the examiner counted six aboard; the other two are named nowhere. Josephine and Peggy were found aboard the schooner Vesta with no manifest of their own. An infant entered as Joseph Gorham was struck through in his schooner's papers: "died on board before clearing Vessel." Plus the Fisher family of the ship Seaman, the brig Tuscarilla's 41 lines headed by Juba, 55, entered blind, and rare full surnames throughout.
