Five full days of substitute-ready third grade in one no-prep download, covering reading, math, writing, word study, science and social studies — every subject the person covering your room has to fill, in the order you would teach them. Each day is two pages: an original nonfiction reading with every answer on the handout, then a math review that checks its own answers, and a find-the-mistake task every student does (word study on Days 2 and 4, editing on Day 5, a science correction on Days 1 and 3). Writing appears twice: in that editing and word-study block, and again as a longer prompt in the finish-early box for the students who get there. Nothing needs a device, a textbook, a login, or a teacher who knows the content. You come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)

- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (67 questions total)

- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day

- 5 complete answer keys, one per day

- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys

- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day

- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable

WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS

- Every question can be answered or worked out from the reading on the same handout, so a stuck student re-reads the passage instead of asking the sub a subject question

- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a word or phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub

- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work

- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed

THE 5 DAYS

1. Life Cycles, Multiplication and Division -- a science reading on animal life cycles, a multiplication and division review, and a writing prompt (14 questions, word decoder)

2. Ellis Island, Addition and Subtraction -- a social studies reading on Ellis Island, an addition and subtraction review, and word study (14 questions, answer match)

3. The Water Cycle, Rounding and Place Value -- a science reading on the water cycle, a rounding and place value review, and a writing prompt (14 questions, word decoder)

4. Reading a Map, Multiplying by Tens -- a social studies reading on how to read a map, a multiplying-by-tens review, and word study (11 questions, sequence path)

5. Simple Machines, Area and Perimeter -- a science reading on simple machines, an area and perimeter review, an editing task and a wrap-up that looks back across the week (14 questions, answer match)

Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.

STANDARDS TOUCHED

CCSS ELA/Literacy grade 3: RI.3.1, RI.3.3 and RI.3.4 on the five readings and their comprehension questions, L.3.1.b on the Day 2 plural-noun work, L.3.2 with L.3.2.a and L.3.2.d on the Day 5 editing task, L.3.4.a on the daily vocabulary-in- context question, and L.3.4.b on the Day 4 prefix work. RI.3.1 asks the student to answer questions 'referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers', and all thirty comprehension questions do exactly that; the five copy-the- supporting-sentence items are the strongest instances, and every model quote in the answer keys is a complete sentence reproduced verbatim from its own passage. CCSS Math grade 3: 3.OA.C.7, 3.NBT.A.2, 3.NBT.A.1, 3.NBT.A.3 and 3.MD.D.8, one per day's math review, plus MP1 on every self-checking math block and MP6 on Days 3, 4 and 5. Day 4's reading carries no RI.3.3 item and Day 5's area work carries no math content code — both deliberate. Nothing is listed that the content does not actually do.
