Check The Thought Worksheet
Check the Thought | Balanced Thinking & Self-Talk Worksheet
Help students slow down and take a closer look at the thoughts that show up during difficult situations. “Check the Thought” guides students through identifying an initial thought, examining the evidence, and considering a fair, realistic alternative.
The simple three-column layout gives students space to question assumptions and practice speaking to themselves with the same care they might offer a friend.
Students will explore:
The first thought that came to mind.
Facts that support the thought.
Facts that do not support it.
Another possible way to understand the situation.
What they would say to a friend experiencing something similar.
What’s included: One black-and-white worksheet featuring a brief introduction, three organized columns, five guided prompts, and open writing spaces.
Use with middle and high school students during individual counseling, small groups, or social-emotional learning activities. It provides a practical starting point for conversations about jumping to conclusions, self-criticism, and developing more balanced self-talk.
