Courts and the Justice System Unit 5: Worksheets, Readings & Activities
Teach courts and the justice system with eight lessons for general high school government. Students read how a dispute moves into court, compare federal and state systems, and explain judicial review, due process, and checks on judicial power.
The activities vary across the unit: full articles, branching organizers, open notes, a jurisdiction sort, a case sequence, a checks-and-balances web, paired arguments, a partner game, and a crossword. The supplied readings and teacher keys give you a starting point without needing a textbook or student internet research.
What students work through
- Why courts matter: a two-page article built around a fictional dispute, a branching organizer, and civil/criminal practice.
- Federal and state courts: a reference reading and a court-system diagram, with an open notes alternative. Includes the Texas court system.
- Jurisdiction and appeals: a reference, six case files to sort, and a branching flowchart following a federal civil case.
- Judicial review: a two-page article about Marbury v. Madison, a connected case brief, and a claim check.
- Fair procedures and checks on power: civil-case sequencing, due-process scenarios, a checks-and-balances web, and paired arguments about a fictional rule.
- Review and assessment: an open study guide, a partner game or 10-term crossword, a 100-point assessment with 12 multiple-choice questions and two case applications, and a corrections page.
What's in the download
One ZIP contains four PDFs and font notices:
- A two-page Start Here guide with printing, classroom-use, and support details.
- The full 38-page unit: 25 student pages and 13 teacher/reference pages with the optional eight-lesson print map, lesson guides, answer keys, scoring rubric, and sources.
- A separate 25-page student print copy.
- A separate 13-page teacher print copy.
The separate print copies repeat pages from the full packet; they are not additional activities. The open notes page and crossword are alternatives. Files are printable, non-fillable US Letter PDFs. Editable Word, Google Docs, and slide files are not included.
Planning and classroom use
Plan for eight 40-55 minute lessons, adjusting for your students' reading and discussion needs. Times are estimates. Students should already know the three branches of government. Teacher guidance includes reading supports, modeling suggestions, and independent-work options for absences.
You'll need a device to extract the ZIP and open the PDFs, access to a printer, and student writing supplies. Print at Actual Size or 100%, using Fit if your printer clips an edge. Print the partner game single-sided, one copy per pair. Student activities work offline.
License and support
For one teacher and their own students. You may print student copies or share student pages in a password-protected class platform. Keep teacher keys private. Resale and public redistribution are prohibited. Digital download only; no physical item is shipped.
Version 1.1, November 5, 2026. Student activities include directions and omit day labels and printed page numbers. Optional pacing and print maps remain in the teacher guides.
