Simple and elegant, the Lady of Lorien Shawl is a timeless crescent shawl pattern. Among its many desirable qualities is the fact that there is nary a purl stitch in the entire shawl. Slender slipped stitch columns are set against a backdrop of relaxing garter stitch, which perfectly balances cozy plumpness with lightweight wearability, and radiate as the light of the lady’s star phial. A modified old shale lace pattern finishes the piece with ripples subtly reminiscent of the waters of Galadriel’s mirror.

Measurements

Wingspan - 78in. (195cm)

Depth - 19in. (48cm)

(A greater depth can be achieved during blocking if desired. I decided to pull the bottom edge just enough to open up the lace border, because I didn’t want to open up the garter stitch of the main body too much, but if you want a deeper shawl or like the look of it stretched out more, then feel free to block a little more aggressively.)

Gauge

24 sts x 40 rows = 4in (10cm) in stockinette worked flat after blocking

Yarn

Sample uses

Refracted Light Fiber Arts - Rivendell Fingering (437yds 400m, 100g) - 2 skeins

Refracted Light Fiber Arts - Lorien Lace (459yds 420m, 50g) - 1 skein

Both in the “Smoke” colorway

To substitute, use

Yarn A - 800 yards fingering weight yarn

Yarn B - 280 yards fingering weight yarn in a contrasting color or texture

(I love the halo and slight luxuriousness that the hint of suri adds to this pattern, but you could also achieve a lovely effect with mohair or by adding contrast in color instead of texture)

Needles

US 2 (2.75mm) 36in. (90cm) circular needle

tapestry needle

flexible blocking wires (optional)
