The Practical Discipline Toolkit

Know what to do when your child says "No".

You’ve asked calmly. You’ve explained. You’ve tried being firmer. Your child is still arguing, and you’re wondering what to do next.

Knowing the parenting advice is one thing. Putting it to work at the end of a long day is another.

The Practical Discipline Toolkit helps you turn twelve useful discipline tools into everyday parenting practice.

It’s a substantial guide for parents and carers of children aged approximately 4–12, created by parenting educator and author Michael Grose.

Discipline means teaching. This toolkit helps you hold reasonable boundaries, respond to resistance and teach the behaviour your child can use next time. You’ll start with what you can change: your words, expectations, timing and follow-through.

Go Beyond Knowing the Tools

For each of the twelve tools, you’ll find practical explanations, words you can borrow, a possible child response and your next move. Because the difficult part often comes after your child says, “No”.

Learn how to connect before correcting, give clear instructions, use descriptive praise, choose safe consequences, help children settle, offer structured choices and make transitions easier. Practise modelling, explaining impact and repairing after conflict too.

Inside Your Toolkit

•         Twelve discipline tools to put into practice, with worked examples and adjustments for younger and older children.

•         Four everyday situations: refusal, screen endings, sibling conflict and bedtime battles.

•         Seven practice sheets, including a confidence check, observation sheet, family boundaries and routines, response plan, calming and repair plan, adult agreement and seven-day practice record.

•         A four-week implementation plan so you can begin with one situation and one manageable change.

•         A quick-reference page for difficult moments, plus guidance on when to seek individual support.

Three formats for everyday use

Your download includes a PDF for reading and printing, a Word document for completing your family’s practice pages, and a reflowable EPUB for reading on your phone or e-reader in a compatible app. The worksheets are easiest to complete in Word or on printed pages.

You don’t need to use every tool at once. Pick one recurring difficulty, practise one adult response and notice what becomes easier. The aim is growing confidence and skill over time; a child can dislike a limit while you handle it well.
