Born at Malibu, California during the summers of 1956 and 1957, the character of “Gidget” was to go on to win the hearts of teenagers everywhere, even those in landlocked areas. She not only helped to establish the image of surfing and the surfer via her first person anecdotes and the subsequent Hollwoodisation of the character, but became a teenage spokesperson for “Women’s Lib” ... or should that be “GIRL POWER!”

A total of eight books followed her teenage escapades from surfing acolyte to married woman, a journey also captured cinematically in a number of films, beginning with GIDGET in 1959.
