Vegan restaurant card for Japan
Veganism is not well understood in Japan yet and often restaurant staff is overwhelmed with „special requests“ from vegans.
Either they understand that you don’t eat fish, but still bring you a soup with fish broth OR they don’t even know what you actually CAN eat and offer you plain rice and salad leaves. (All that and more happened to me already…)
✅To help you with communication in a non-vegan restaurant, I created these cards for you:
👉🏻 the top half tells the staff what you don‘t eat. I tried to include all possibilities to avoid misunderstanding (chicken may not be seen as „meat“, only saying „fish“ doesn’t include other seafood, etc.)
👉🏻 the part below tells the staff what you do eat. There is of course much more vegans can eat, however, I tried to reduce it to the most common available vegan foods in Japan.
👍🏻I included the English translation as well as a phonetic transcription, so you can learn how to pronounce it in Japanese, too.
The red ❌ shall underline the importance of the no-go foods and the green ⭕️ is signaling the „ok“ as it is common in Japan (rather than a „thumbs up“ gesture).
