300 Chinese characters for Level 1 of HSK 3.0
The new HSK 3.0 examination format takes effect worldwide on December 13, 2026. With the transition approaching, now is the time to build a solid foundation in Chinese writing.
自学汉字王 (Self-Study King of Chinese Characters) workbook is designed for beginners preparing for HSK 3.0 Level 1. It provides structured handwriting practice for 300 essential Chinese characters, helping you develop a skill that goes beyond simply recognizing characters on a screen.
The workbook contains exactly the 300 Chinese characters specified for Level 1 in Section 5.1, 一级汉字表 (Level 1 Chinese Character List), of the official standard 《国际中文教育中文水平等级标准》 (GF0025-2021), developed under the organization of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China.
The characters in the official Level 1 list are presented in ascending alphabetical order of their readings. In this workbook, however, the same 300 characters have been arranged in a more handwriting-oriented sequence: first in ascending order of the number of strokes, and then, within each stroke-count group, in ascending alphabetical order of their readings. This arrangement allows learners to begin with characters of simpler graphic structure and gradually progress toward more complex ones.
Learning to write a character by hand requires you to understand its structure, remember its individual strokes, and reproduce them in the correct order. Instead of memorizing thousands of seemingly unrelated shapes, you learn to recognize recurring components and the principles behind character construction.
Step-by-step exercises guide you through each character: follow the stroke order, build the character one stroke at a time, and then practise writing it independently. This method strengthens visual memory, attention to detail, and the ability to recall characters without prompts.
This workbook supplements textbooks, apps, online courses, and other educational materials available on a variety of websites. It focuses specifically on handwriting, helping you make it a regular part of your HSK preparation.
Prepare for HSK 3.0 by learning not only to recognize Chinese characters, but also to write them.
