300 original practice questions, every one written from the published exam framework, with an explanation for every wrong answer as well as for the right one.

This is a question bank, not a textbook. It is built for the stage of study where the reading is done and what is left is finding out which answers are wrong, and why.

How the book is organised

  • A 22-question diagnostic that returns a study order rather than a score, weighted by the framework, so a gap in English Language Arts and Reading or Science (21.5 percent each) outranks a gap in a 19 percent subject.
  • One chapter per subject exam: English Language Arts and Reading; Mathematics; Social Studies; Science; Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education. The diagnostic and both practice exams are drawn at the published weights.
  • Questions in sets of ten, with the answers starting on a later page, so reading ahead by accident is not possible.
  • Two timed practice exams of 121 questions each, mixed in the framework's proportions and paced to the real exam's 300 minutes for 210 questions.
  • A second-best-answer drill, a misconception index, a competency cross-reference and a glossary.

What is different about the explanations

Most prep books explain the correct answer and leave the other three alone. Every explanation here does four things: why the key is right, traced to the competency it came from; why each wrong option was tempting, naming the misconception behind it; the detail in the question that rules that option out; and the one line that separates the key from the next-best option. Many questions are classroom scenarios, where the failure mode is rarely ignorance. It is choosing the second-best answer.

Written to the published exam framework

Every question traces to a competency in the Core Subjects EC-6 (391) exam framework. The explanations draw on public sources: the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for the elementary grades, the Report of the National Reading Panel, federal practice and safety guides, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and open textbooks. No question is taken from, or modelled on, any real or sample exam question. The diagnostic, the two practice exams and the drill draw on the same bank, so 300 is the number of distinct questions in the book rather than a count of repeats.

Which exam this book is for

It is written for the Core Subjects EC-6 (391) exam and its five subject exams. The reading chapter follows the 391 framework, whose reading statements are written for grades 4 to 6; early reading foundations are tested on the separate Science of Teaching Reading exam, and the certificate also requires a pedagogy exam. This book covers neither. The Texas Education Agency has announced that candidates have until 31 August 2027 to take the 391 exam and that a redesigned Core EC-6 exam begins on 1 September 2027. If you test after that date, the subject knowledge here still applies, but the subtests and weights may not.

No book can promise a result. This one shows which answers are wrong, and what the wrong answer was built out of, before the exam asks.

This book is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Texas Education Agency or Pearson.
