Night Sky Stories is an interactive science and humanities activity where students explore the night sky through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander astronomical traditions across 3 steps. Students click on an interactive star map to reveal the stories, seasonal knowledge, and cultural significance behind constellations including the Emu in the Sky, the Seven Sisters, the Southern Cross, Scorpius, Canopus, Orion, the Milky Way, and the Teapot — comparing First Nations and Western interpretations of the same stars. They then complete an 8-round story matching challenge before writing a personal reflection and answering a 10-question knowledge quiz. Through the activity, students build understanding of dark constellations, Aboriginal navigation and calendars, cross-cultural sky knowledge, and the depth and age of First Nations astronomical traditions, working towards earning their Night Sky Stories certificate.
